Trial Plot Update for 2023 Trials - October 2022

While you have been busy drilling your autumn crops, Wynnstay alongside Syngenta and Bradford Estates have been busy preparing for the 2023 Arable Event demonstration trials. Back in August field work began with land preparation, marking out, and weed control giving us the best start possible.

Late August saw the Oilseed Rape demonstration trial being sown, which despite the dry weather, has established well and will shortly receive its first autumn herbicide. The trial consists of 15 OSR varieties including popular widely grown varieties, to newer and exclusive varieties not shown in the AHDB trials. Wynnstay is additionally running a fully replicated OSR evaluation trial off site, to really understand their suitability for the west.

In late September Syngenta’s trial team drilled a full complement of winter cereals including wheat, barley, oats, triticale, and hybrid rye. The trial, following a commercial OSR crop, will be half fungicide treated and half untreated, giving us a good look at how varieties are performing under these protocols in the area.

Seed treatment technology is a particularly exciting part of our industry. It allows us to maximise the genetic potential each variety has been developing rapidly in recent years. This year we are eager to announce is the introduction of a biological seed treatment trial in, which will look to compare differing treatments against each other and against more traditional seed treatments. I am looking forward to showing you around the trial next June and being able to take any results forward widening our knowledge on the biological seed treatments.
