Trial Plots 2024 - February Update
Site Introduction
The Arable Event plots have been expanded this year to include variety, fertiliser, and bio-stimulant demonstrations. The plots which are being looked after by our Arable department will show the seed departments recommendations on a full complement of winter cereals including wheat, barley, oats, hybrid rye and triticale. SY Cheer a newly recommended Group 1 milling wheat will be on show again, Bamford which was quick out of the ground is a new soft wheat from Elsoms is joint top yielding and looks to have a strong disease profile. LG Beowulf is a new entry hard feed wheat from Limagrain will definitely be worth looking at with its high yields and untreated yield over 90%. On the barley front LG Capitol is the only new conventional barley which sits joint top of the RL. Also showcased is the new hybrid barley SY Buzzard which boasts a BYDV tolerance. Cromwell makes its first appearance at the Arable Event after a successful launch last year which is looking to rival Mascani in the milling oat sector. Lumaco triticale which is proving to be an advancement on KWS Fido is also on show at the event. Recognising the increasing importance of Bio-stimulants we are demonstrating several foliar products which are looking particularly interesting to farmers. We are inviting several leading manufacturers to demonstrate their products currently Corteva and UPL are signed up. Lastly, industry leading fertiliser manufacturers YARA, ICL, LKAB and Omex will be on site demonstrating a range of different fertiliser products. Each of which will be on hand to discuss and help with their product ranges.
Crop Update
The site was drilled back on the 6th of October into relevantly good conditions. Previous cropping was lettuce before it was min-tilled and then drilled via a combination drill. Apart from the hybrid barley and rye (200 seeds/m2) the sowing rate was 300 seeds/m2. Since drilling there’s been no getting away from the near constant rainfall we have had. Thankfully the plots have established well and despite a few wet patches they look in good condition heading into spring. Our local agronomist Ellie has already created a nutrient management plan based on the soil tests completed last autumn. Ellie will also be available on the day to talk through herbicide and fungicide applications.
We will be bringing you regular updates on how the site is looking as we go through the spring. Not forgetting that on the day we will be happy to talk to you about any aspect of trial plots.
